Day # 1: Saturday, March 15, 8:30am – 4:30pm
8:30am – 12Noon: Classroom PowerPoint Lecture
Presentation on design, shape, color (aerial perspective, value, saturation, temperature), edges, and texture. Other topics are thumbnail sketch, common problems in plein air painting.
12Noon – 1:00pm: Lunch Break (At the Muth Center. Participants bring their own lunch)
1:00 – 4:30pm: Outdoors near the Muth Center
A brief demo by Jeff followed by students setting up and painting. Jeff will provide Individual instruction emphasizing principals from the morning lecture. Students may choose to remain at the Back Bay after 4:30pm until the park closes at sunset, either to work on the painting they started earlier or to work on a second painting.
Day # 2: Sunday, March 16, 8:30 – 4:00pm
This day is dedicated to sketching and painting by the students with help and instruction from the instructor.
Two locations at the Back Bay (maps supplied). Carpooling recommended for afternoon. Students bring a sack lunch. Restrooms will be nearby for the morning session but NOT for the afternoon session.
8:30am – 12Noon: Back Bay Location #1 (Cul du sac at the end of North Star Lane, Newport Beach) RESTROOMS AVAILABLE
Students find the scene they wish to paint, do compositional sketching, and begin work on their oil painting. Jeff provides individual attention, emphasizing principals from his lecture and providing instruction where necessary.
12Noon – 1:00pm: Lunch Break
1:00 – 4:00pm: Back Bay Location #2 (Back Bay Drive/Mountain to the Sea Trail and Bikeway, the first turnout on the left near the Newport Bay Nature Preserve entrance) RESTROOMS NOT AVAILABLE
A second painting will be started at this new location and, again, Jeff works closely with each student to ensure a good understanding of principles and offer instruction where needed.
6:00 – 8:00PM: Jeff Horn Studio (map included)
Students meet at Jeff Horn’s studio (map will be provided). Complimentary wine and cheese will be served, and Jeff will provide a viewing and discussion of his painting collection which includes a large list of notable plein air painters. Jeff will discuss and show how many of these paintings illustrate the principles he emphasized during the two days of the workshop.
