Creating an Acrylic Painting Outdoors

Special Guest Artist Demonstration by Rick Delanty

Please join Rick Delanty at the Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens for a demo of acrylic techniques and approaches for painting “en plein air.” Rick has been painting 50 years and 20 of those full-time, and has experience in watercolor, acrylic, and oil painting. He was one of 24 faculty members whose demonstrations were featured in the February 2025 inaugural “Acrylic Live” by Eric Rhoads.

In this demonstration, Rick will address the forgiving nature of the acrylic medium as he begins with a preliminary value sketch to establish a strong composition, then identifies simple color-shapes on his canvas, and pays particular attention to the light source as he works through the painting. How to make corrections, add texture, and achieve simplification will be his areas of focus as he paints in the courtyard of the beautiful grounds of San Clemente’s founder’s home. Questions are encouraged.

Admission is $8. Artists may paint after the demo until Casa closes at 2 pm.
